Ellen was born about 1867 in Camden Town.  Ellen's father was James Purves (Scotland Farrier) and her mother was Eleanor (Ellen) Hume (b Wooler/Berwick).  Her paternal grandparents were James Purves (Scotland Blacksmith) and Jane Morrison?; her maternal grandparents were William Hume (Ag Labourer) and Elizabeth. She had four brothers and five sisters, named Robert, James, John, Joseph, Margaret, Jane, Jessie, Bessie and Annie.  She was the fourth youngest of the ten children.
