Joseph was born about 1870 in Chalk Farm Pancras.  Joseph's father was James Purves (Scotland Farrier) and his mother was Eleanor (Ellen) Hume (b Wooler/Berwick).  His paternal grandparents were James Purves (Scotland Blacksmith) and Jane Morrison?; his maternal grandparents were William Hume (Ag Labourer) and Elizabeth. He had three brothers and six sisters, named Robert, James, John, Margaret, Jane, Jessie, Ellen, Bessie and Annie.  He was the third youngest of the ten children.
