Helen's father was Robert Fairley and her mother was Helen Thomson. Her paternal grandparents were John Fairlie and Janet Bird; her maternal grandparents were Archibald Thomson and Margaret Paterson. She had four brothers and three sisters, named John, Archibald, Robert, Andrew, Maggie, Janet and Janet. She was the third oldest of the eight children. She died at the age of 69 in 1937 in Old Monkland.
