Archibald's father was Robert Fairley and his mother was Helen Thomson. His paternal grandparents were John Fairlie and Janet Bird; his maternal grandparents were Archibald Thomson and Margaret Paterson. He had three brothers and four sisters, named John, Robert, Andrew, Maggie, Janet, Helen and Janet. He was the fourth youngest of the eight children. He died at the age of 80 in 1954 in Uphall.
