Devorguilla MacDonald was born about 1220 in Fotheringay Castle, Galloway, Scotland.  Devorguilla MacDonald's father was Alan MacDonald de Galloway and her mother was Margaret Dunkeld of Huntingdon.  Her paternal grandparents were Roland de Galloway and Elena de Morville; her maternal grandparents were David Dunkeld of Huntingdon and Mabel de Kevelioc de Meschines of Chester. She had four half-sisters named Alianora, Christina MacDonald, Marion and Helen MacDonald.


Devorguilla MacDonald's family with John de Balliol

‌Devorguilla MacDonald and John were married in a religious ceremony about 1233.  They had four sons and four daughters, named Alan, Roger FitzJohn de Balliol, William, John Balliol of, Cecily, Euphemia, Eleanor and Ada.
