Alan MacDonald was born about 1174 in Runnemede, Scotland.  Alan MacDonald's father was Roland de Galloway and his mother was Elena de Morville.  His paternal grandparents were Uchtred of Galloway and Gunnild of Dunbar; his maternal grandfather was Richard de Morville and his maternal grandmother is Alice de Percy. He had a brother and a sister, named Thomas and Devorguilla.  He was the oldest of the three children.  He died in 1234.
