In 1881, Charles was living next door to Esther's daughter Ann Brereton, nee Eddowes. 1856 - 1940 Ann Brereton 83 83 Ann kept a birthday book of their family birthdays.  This has provided several birth dates in this family tree.

Annie was the only daughter of Esther and was obviously very special to her.  Her mother Esther Brereton left Ann Hale her home (56 Church Street, Birkenhead), clothes, jewellery, and more in her Will when she died in 1917.

Ann was witness to brother John's wedding in 1876

26 Nov 1910, "Mrs Hale (cousin)" attended the funeral of Lillian Cross (nee Eddowes), who's death was caused by "accidental burning".

Ann Hale was living with daughter Agnes Thomas at 56 Church Street, Birkenhead in 1939, recorded as an invalid.  She died 6 months later.
1835 - 1917 Esther Eddowes 82 82 Esther Eddowes was born about 1835 and baptised 17 April 1836.  She is my 2x great grandmother.

In 1851, Esther aged 15 born Holt, was with her parents John and Mary and siblings Edmund and John.

On 24 Oct 1853, Esther Eddowes married Richared Brereton at Brymbo, Wrexham.  Esther was aged 18 and Richard 19.

Brearton was spelt "Braeton" in 1861 census.  Esther and her son John were born at Common Wood, Wrexham (1871 census) by Gresfoird.

Living at 18 George St., Birkenhead in 1871 and 1881, with several boarders including George Eddowes living with them.

On 24 Oug 1878 Esther was in the news. She and her niece Martha Eddowes were summonsed for assault on Ann Baker, Martha's sister.

In 1891, Richard and Esther were at the Shropshire Inn, New Road.

Esther Brereton was listed in the 1906 Kelly's Directory: At 11 Willaston Pl, Birkenhead - Bird-in-Hand P.H., although it was actually 11 Chapel Street.

After Esther's husband, Richard dIed, Esther sold the pub (the Bird in Hand) and bought a house, 56 Church Street.

Esther died in 1917 and left a Will, leaving her house and most of her estate to her daughter Anne Hale (see reference for a transcript of the Will).
1858 - 1920 Richard Brereton 61 61 Richard and Lydia are my Great Grandparents.

There is no birth registered (i.e. indexed) for Richard or George in Birkenhead or elsewhere, although there are other Brereton's (9 girls) registered in Birkenhead 1856-66.

Richard is one of my 2 Great Grandfather.  He was a publican and a heavy drinker.  He ran the Red Lion at 7 Tunnel Road in Birkenhead, now pulled down to make way for the Tunnel approach roads.

In 1878 a Richard Brereton (Cheshire) was sentanced 2 months for larceny.  Is this the same person?

Name spelt "Brearton" in 1901 census.

Richard was aged 52 and living in Birkenhead in 1911.  Like his father, he also ran a pub, the Red Lion, Tunnel Road, Birkenhead.

His mother Esther Brereton left Richard £100 in her will when she died in 1917.  In those days, that was a lot of money!.

Richard Brereton, Beer Retailer, died 9 Feb 1920 at 7 Tunnel Road (Birkenhead), aged 61 years.  The cause of death was Cirrhosis of the liver and Exhaustion.  R. T. Brereton, Son was in attendance.

1854 - 1913 John Brereton 59 59 1871 Living with family (aged 17).

1891 John and Eliza with John & George lived at 27 Marion Street Birkenhead where he worked as Points shunter.  Ada , Esther & Florence can be found staying with grandparents (Michard & Esther Ererton* as transcribed) in Eyton, Denbighshire, Wales.

1901 John and Eliza with 6 children lived at 1 Tunnel Road Birkenhead where he worked as Publican and Florrie (Florence) aged 19 works as a waitress at a Pub.
Ada and Joseph are found living at 32 Camden Street where Ada worked at home as a dressmaker and Joseph worked as a railway points maker.

By 1906, John had a Commercial Hotel at 25 Grange Road and 1 Tunnel Road (as well as Richard Brereton being at the Red Lion, at 7 Tunnel Road). See Kelly's 1906 directory.

About 1906, John moved to the White Lion at Childer Thornton, and was recorded there in the 1911 census (59) with wife Eliza (56) and George, William and May (20, 17, & 13).

On Oct 16th 1913, John made his will, leaving everything to his wife Eliza.  Alfred Goodwin and Joseph Shipley were witness.  Probate was granted 10 Feb 1914.

WARNING: Thomas (b.8131) and Hannah (b.1838) Brearton also had a John Brereton, born Buereton, Cheshire of same age.
1833 - 1904 Richard Brereton 70 70 Richard is one of my 4 Great Great (2X) Grandfathers.  Richards 1835 baptism at Tilston shows his parents were Richard and Jane, not George and Jane.

In 1851, Richard (16), was the oldest son of George Brereton.  Richard was an Ag Labourer at Cuddington Mill.

Richards marriage certificate (1853) shows his farther was George Brereton.  The family moved to Birkenhead in 1855 (after John was born).

Richard Brereton is recorded at 12 Chapel Street, beer retailer in the PO directory of 1857 (when he was only 24).

Living with his Brereton family and Eddowes's all of his married life.

In 1851, Richard (16, born Tilston) was an Al. Labourer at Cuddington Mill with his parents george and Jane and family.

In 1861, Brearton miss-spelt "Braeton" on e-census record.

In 1885, Richard is described as a Wheelwright when his son George married Mary Batho.

Im 1871, Richard and Esther (both 37) were living at 18 George Street, Birkenhead with John (17), Ann (15), Richard (13), George (10) and boarders George Eddowes (20) and Charles Harrison (25)

In 1891, Richard and Esther were at the Shropshire Inn, New Road.

Richard was a publican and had the "Bird in Hand" at 7 Chapel Street, Birkenhead.  It was a busy pub, opening at 6am so the night shift could have a drink after finishing work.

Richard retired but was still there when he died, 8th June 1904, aged 69.
1862 - 1943 Mary Batho 80 80 Mary and Martha were twins.

Mary was missing and Martha on the 1871 census.

In 1885, Mary Batho married George Brereton, a Ships Cook.
1861 - 1936 George (Teapot) Brereton 75 75 There is no birth registered (i.e. indexed) for Richard or George in Birkenhead or elsewhere.

George was called “Teapot George” in the family because of the enormous teapot he was given (and which was used to serve teas) on his 21st birthday.  The Teapot was handed down to Dorothy Ann Brereton, who now has it in her dining room.

In 1871, George was living in Birkenhead with family (aged 10).

In 1881, George (aged 20) was visiting Mary Ann Griffiths (his brother Richard's sister-in-law) at the Nags Head Inn, Dutton Cacca, Denbighshire. His occupation was Cook on Sea.  In 1887 he was registered as 2nd Cook (under the chief cook) on the Liguria, sailing from Tilbury.

In 1885, George "ship's cook" married Mary Batho.

Recorded living at Newton in Makerfield, Lancashire in 1891 and 1901 census (no children).

There was a George Brereton from Birkenhead, aged 30 living in Warrington in 1911 with Mary Hannah Scragg and family, including a Joseph Brereton Scragg, aged 14.  This Mary Hanah Brereton married William George Scragg in 1898, so this is another George Brereton, probably Mary Hanah's brother.

George and Mary are at 78 Haydock St, Newton-in-Makerfield in 1911 (see family picture).  NEWTON-IN-MACKERFIELD is a town, parish and sub-district of Warrington, Lancashire.

However, Mary E is also shown with her mother Louisa Hale. Relative of Neighbor: In 1881, Charles and Ann Eddowes (43 & 49) were with Emily (18), Elizabeth (16), Charles W (14) and Thomas J (9) at 52 Meadow Lane, Tranmere. Next door at No. 50 were Thomas and Ann Hale and family. Relative of: Nicky, and Alexandria Lunt have shared DNA matches with CKD and myself (and others). 1852 - 1914 Thomas Hale 62 62 Family registered as Hall (not Hale) in 1891 Census index.

Thomas's father, David Hale, a joiner, moved to Tranmere, Birkenhead from Bromley, Kent, whilest his brother William moved to Australia in mid 1850s.

The first 4 children's births were registered at Tranmere, and then from 1880, Birkenhead.

His first wife Mary may have died, and Thomas remarried.
1879 - 1962 David (Dave) Richard Hale 83 83 Cant find any Marriage in Cheshire.  He may have married Agnes in Liverpool, but there's a 20y age difference.

David Richard Hale, aged 22, single, and born Birkenhead was an Upholsterer at Colwick, Nottinghamshire in 1901.

In 1939 David (born 20 Mar 79) was an Upholsterer, living at 108 Edgware Steet, Liverpool.  He is with Emily H Hale born 29 Jul 1896-99), so possibly his wife, about 20 years his junior. There were no children present (after 17 years of marriage).

In 1955, David R and Emily A Hale were at 44 Nuttall Street, Edge Hill, Liverpool
1880 - 1956 Thomas (Tom) Hale 76 76 Tom Hale married Margaret Winslade in 1903 (registry office or non-CoE e.g. Baptist marriage) in Birkenhead and had Annie Louise Hale (b.1903), Margaret Irene Hale (b.1908) and Thomas Arthur (b.1913) in Tranmere.

In 1921 Thomas Hale (b.1880) and Margaret (born London, 1875) are still in Birkenhead with Annie Louise (b.1905) and Margaret Irene (b.1908).

Tom must have left Margaret about 1921 or 1922.

Cant find Tom and Margaret on the 1839 register.
1882 - 1951 John (Jack) Hale 68 68 1887 - 1948 Mary Esther Hale 61 61 Known as Esther.

1906, Mary Esther Hale married Richard Carter Egerton at  Birkenhead.
1889 - 1957 William (Bill) Hale 68 68 Two Williams died in 1957:

William Hale of 8 Branston Lane, Moreton, Wallasey, Cheshire died 28 Aug 1957.  Probate Liverpool 16 Sep to Margaret Alice Hale, Widow.  Effects £1,433 15s

Another William Hale of 56 Gorse Crescent, Wallasey died 10 Oct 1957. Probate to John Davies, Propeller shaper. £435  That is another!
1895 - 1976 Ann (Annie) Hale 80 80 Note: There's another Ann (Elizabeth) Hale, who also married at Birkenhead Methodist Chapel in 1924, but this appears to be another unrelated person! 1885 - 1945 Edward (Ted) Hale 60 60 Edward was staying with Richard and Esther in 1891, but name recorded as Hall, not Hale.

Ted lost one of his hands in the first world war.  However, the house he lived in until his death in about 1946 or 47 had a garden of about 1/3 of an acre.  How he managed to look after it, was simply amazing.

When he died, his estate was left to his younger sister Agnes, indicating he had no children
1883 - 1961 Lillian (Lily) Preece 77 77 Sisters Lillian and Alice Preece married two Hale brothers, George and John (aka Jack).

Alice Maria Preece (George's sister-in-law) was staying with them in 1911.

Lily was at 27 Marita Grange Mount, Wirral in 1939, living with Gladys and Jonathan.
1875 - 1967 Margaret Winslade 91 91 Living in Birkenhead in 1901, working as a servant

In 1921 Thomas Hale (b.1880) and Margaret (born London, 1875) are in Birkenhead with Annie Louise (b.1905) and Margaret Irene  (b.1908).

About 1921 or 1922, Tom left Margaret for another woman - Sarah Williams and moved to Coventry.

Margaret Hale was living with her daughter in 1939, U.D.D. (i.e. housekeeper).  Tom was missing.
1907 - 1949 Gladys Hale 42 42 Gladis may have married a Johnathan Cotgrave in 1930.

Two other Gladys Hales born in Brikedhead to other families, both died young.
1908 - 1981 Margaret Irene Hale 73 73 1905 - 1980 Annie Louisa Hale 74 74 In 1911, Aged 5 with Margaret Ireen (2) and both parents.

Living at 20 Woodside Road, Wirral in 1939
1893 - 1893 Henry Hale 6m 6m We know of Henry from the burial records of Richard and Exther Brereton.  Baby Henry was buried with them. 1916 Minnie Hale 1918 George Hale 1922 - 1922 Eunice Hale Eunice was an infant death (as birth and death registered in same quarter).  It is also possible she was the daughter of George and Lillian (Mother's Maiden Surname is confirmed as Preece), but Alice is the more likely mother as births more evenly spaced apart. Thomas Hale 1891 - 1957 Thomas Jeffs 66 66 Thomas was a farmer until he retired and went to live at Heath Hey, Pensby Road, Pensby. 1915 - 1915 George Hale George was an infant death (as birth and death registered in same quarter).  It is possible that he was the son of Jack and Alice (Mother's Maiden Surname is confirmed as Preece). 1912 David Hale 1913 - 1917 Thomas Arthur Winslade Hale 3 3 Died in Liverpool, aged 3. 1906 James MacDonald 1912 - 1994 Hugh Douglas Corteen 82 82 1903 Johnathan Cotgrave 1879 Alice M Preece Sisters Lillian and Alice Preece married two Hale brothers, George and John (aka Jack). 1937 - 2007 Douglas Malcolm Corteen 70 70 Shirley Margaret Corteen 1877 - 1939 George Hale 62 62 Alice Maria Preece (George's sister-in-law) was staying with them in 1911. 1897 - 1974 Florrie (Flo) Brereton Hale 77 77 Florrie has at least two sons.  Her younger son was Les from Bebington, who kindly provided details on the Hale branch of this tree.  Another who lived with Les and his wife is is John, born about 1928.

Florrie worked in the munitions factory during World War I, Harry Dittmer who was a setter, helped her a lot, making sure her machine was in good order.

In 1939, Florrie lived at Balme, Thornton Road, Bebington.
1890 - 1951 Agnes (Aggie) Hale 60 60 Mum rembers meeting Aggie when she was out once with Aunt Margaret, down by Birkenhead Park (when mum was about 7 to 9 and living in Birkenhead).

Agnes doesn't appear to have been living at home in 1911.  She was staying with a Robert Hale (b.1871), perhaps a cousin or uncle, also living in Birkenhead.

Her grandmother Esther Brereton left Agnes £200 in her will when she died in 1917.

In 1939, Agnes (56, Wid) was with her mother Ann at 56 Church Street, Burkenhead.
1887 - 1918 Edith Price 31 31 1911 - 1938 Edward Hale 27 27 There is no infant death record for Edward, so perhaps he was adopted when Edith died. Edward left his estate to his sister Agnes, with is strange if he had a surviving son!

Edward died aged 27 in 1938.
1863 Mary Batho This could be the Mary Batho that George Brereton married in 1885.  However, this Mary was still at home in 1891, single and a dressmaker, aged 27.

Mary married John Brockelbank at Lower Tranmere, St Luke in Mar 1892. (Wirral, BK13/1/57)
1899 Emily Agnes Bowker Emily may have been a catholic (and possibly Irish), since her husband David was buried in the Catholic section. Audrey E Lamb 1910 Roland Richard Yates-Hale Roland Richard Yates-Hale is the grandfather of Keith Hale with whom I have a 30.5 cM DNA match (over two segments).

In 1936, Roland Richard Yates Hale and Eleanor were in Fulham, a year after he married Eleanor Gillies.

In 1937 and 1938 they were at 240a Malvern Court, South Harrow.

In 1940, '42, '44 and '46 Roland R. Yates-Hall (not Yates-Hale) was in the Thom's Directory at Riverside, Rosemount, DunDurum, Ireland (but may not be the same person).

Kerry Brown 1851 - 1886 John Davies 35 35 John Davis (or Davies), son of John Davis 1853 - 1915 Emily Hale 62 62 Also refered to as Emily Goodwin Hales by K Brown.  Possibly Emily Jane Hales, the daughter of John Hale (b.1794) a cabinet maker, and Mary (b.1817) from Linconshire, on the 1861 census, but more likely the daughter of John Hale (b.1829), a cigar maker and Louisa (b.1830), living in Huddersfield in 1861, but both born in Liverpool. 1886 - 1929 Lillie Davies 42 42 1817 - 1910 David Hale 93 93 18 Jan 1842, David Hale married Mary Millman at Deptford, Kent.

Betweeen 1842 and 1852, David and Mary had 6 children, all registered at Grenwich, except Thomas registered in Poplar in 1852.

About 1852, the family moved to Liverpool and in 1857, Edward Hale was born, but died the following year and the death registered on the Wirral.

George Richard Hale married Annie Davies 21 Nov 1869 at Wallasey, Cheshire.

He died in Birkenhead in 1891, aged 44 (recorded as 47)

When Hannah (25) marries James Edward Thorndike (age 42) from Massachetuas on 10 Oct 1883 in Toxteth, Liverpool, she describes her father John as a Merchant, not a Cigar Maker.

After Hannah was married, she lived in England for about 7  years (where Mary, Robert and Franklyn were born) before emigrating about 1891 (before the April UK census) to Bayonne, Hudson, NJ, USA.
1860 Mary Eleanor Hale 1854 Robert Hale 1865 Frederick William Hale 1804 John Hale John's son was also John, a Cigar Maker (also Robert), so quite a family of tobacconists.
