83
83
Ann kept a birthday book of their family birthdays. This has provided several birth dates in this family tree.
Annie was the only daughter of Esther and was obviously very special to her. Her mother Esther Brereton left Ann Hale her home (56 Church Street, Birkenhead), clothes, jewellery, and more in her Will when she died in 1917.
Ann was witness to brother John's wedding in 1876
26 Nov 1910, "Mrs Hale (cousin)" attended the funeral of Lillian Cross (nee Eddowes), who's death was caused by "accidental burning".
Ann Hale was living with daughter Agnes Thomas at 56 Church Street, Birkenhead in 1939, recorded as an invalid. She died 6 months later.
1835 - 1917
Esther
Eddowes

82
Esther Eddowes was born about 1835 and baptised 17 April 1836. She is my 2x great grandmother.
In 1851, Esther aged 15 born Holt, was with her parents John and Mary and siblings Edmund and John.
On 24 Oct 1853, Esther Eddowes married Richared Brereton at Brymbo, Wrexham. Esther was aged 18 and Richard 19.
Brearton was spelt "Braeton" in 1861 census. Esther and her son John were born at Common Wood, Wrexham (1871 census) by Gresfoird.
Living at 18 George St., Birkenhead in 1871 and 1881, with several boarders including George Eddowes living with them.
On 24 Oug 1878 Esther was in the news. She and her niece Martha Eddowes were summonsed for assault on Ann Baker, Martha's sister.
In 1891, Richard and Esther were at the Shropshire Inn, New Road.
Esther Brereton was listed in the 1906 Kelly's Directory: At 11 Willaston Pl, Birkenhead - Bird-in-Hand P.H., although it was actually 11 Chapel Street.
After Esther's husband, Richard dIed, Esther sold the pub (the Bird in Hand) and bought a house, 56 Church Street.
Esther died in 1917 and left a Will, leaving her house and most of her estate to her daughter Anne Hale (see reference for a transcript of the Will).
1858 - 1920

Richard and Lydia are my Great Grandparents.
There is no birth registered (i.e. indexed) for Richard or George in Birkenhead or elsewhere, although there are other Brereton's (9 girls) registered in Birkenhead 1856-66.
Richard is one of my 2 Great Grandfather. He was a publican and a heavy drinker. He ran the Red Lion at 7 Tunnel Road in Birkenhead, now pulled down to make way for the Tunnel approach roads.
In 1878 a Richard Brereton (Cheshire) was sentanced 2 months for larceny. Is this the same person?
Name spelt "Brearton" in 1901 census.
Richard was aged 52 and living in Birkenhead in 1911. Like his father, he also ran a pub, the Red Lion, Tunnel Road, Birkenhead.
His mother Esther Brereton left Richard £100 in her will when she died in 1917. In those days, that was a lot of money!.
Richard Brereton, Beer Retailer, died 9 Feb 1920 at 7 Tunnel Road (Birkenhead), aged 61 years. The cause of death was Cirrhosis of the liver and Exhaustion. R. T. Brereton, Son was in attendance.

By 1906, John had a Commercial Hotel at 25 Grange Road and 1 Tunnel Road (as well as Richard Brereton being at the Red Lion, at 7 Tunnel Road). See Kelly's 1906 directory.
About 1906, John moved to the White Lion at Childer Thornton, and was recorded there in the 1911 census (59) with wife Eliza (56) and George, William and May (20, 17, & 13).
On Oct 16th 1913, John made his will, leaving everything to his wife Eliza. Alfred Goodwin and Joseph Shipley were witness. Probate was granted 10 Feb 1914.
WARNING: Thomas (b.8131) and Hannah (b.1838) Brearton also had a John Brereton, born Buereton, Cheshire of same age.
1833 - 1904
Richard
Brereton
70

Richard is one of my 4 Great Great (2X) Grandfathers. Richards 1835 baptism at Tilston shows his parents were Richard and Jane, not George and Jane.
In 1851, Richard (16), was the oldest son of George Brereton. Richard was an Ag Labourer at Cuddington Mill.
Richards marriage certificate (1853) shows his farther was George Brereton. The family moved to Birkenhead in 1855 (after John was born).
Richard Brereton is recorded at 12 Chapel Street, beer retailer in the PO directory of 1857 (when he was only 24).
Living with his Brereton family and Eddowes's all of his married life.
In 1851, Richard (16, born Tilston) was an Al. Labourer at Cuddington Mill with his parents george and Jane and family.
In 1861, Brearton miss-spelt "Braeton" on e-census record.
In 1885, Richard is described as a Wheelwright when his son George married Mary Batho.
Im 1871, Richard and Esther (both 37) were living at 18 George Street, Birkenhead with John (17), Ann (15), Richard (13), George (10) and boarders George Eddowes (20) and Charles Harrison (25)
In 1891, Richard and Esther were at the Shropshire Inn, New Road.
Richard was a publican and had the "Bird in Hand" at 7 Chapel Street, Birkenhead. It was a busy pub, opening at 6am so the night shift could have a drink after finishing work.
Richard retired but was still there when he died, 8th June 1904, aged 69.
1862 - 1943
Mary

80
Mary and Martha were twins.
Mary was missing and Martha on the 1871 census.
In 1885, Mary Batho married George Brereton, a Ships Cook.

75
75
There is no birth registered (i.e. indexed) for Richard or George in Birkenhead or elsewhere.
George was called “Teapot George” in the family because of the enormous teapot he was given (and which was used to serve teas) on his 21st birthday. The Teapot was handed down to Dorothy Ann Brereton, who now has it in her dining room.
In 1871, George was living in Birkenhead with family (aged 10).
In 1881, George (aged 20) was visiting Mary Ann Griffiths (his brother Richard's sister-in-law) at the Nags Head Inn, Dutton Cacca, Denbighshire. His occupation was Cook on Sea. In 1887 he was registered as 2nd Cook (under the chief cook) on the Liguria, sailing from Tilbury.
In 1885, George "ship's cook" married Mary Batho.
Recorded living at Newton in Makerfield, Lancashire in 1891 and 1901 census (no children).
There was a George Brereton from Birkenhead, aged 30 living in Warrington in 1911 with Mary Hannah Scragg and family, including a Joseph Brereton Scragg, aged 14. This Mary Hanah Brereton married William George Scragg in 1898, so this is another George Brereton, probably Mary Hanah's brother.
George and Mary are at 78 Haydock St, Newton-in-Makerfield in 1911 (see family picture). NEWTON-IN-MACKERFIELD is a town, parish and sub-district of Warrington, Lancashire.

In 1939 David (born 20 Mar 79) was an Upholsterer, living at 108 Edgware Steet, Liverpool. He is with Emily H Hale born 29 Jul 1896-99), so possibly his wife, about 20 years his junior. There were no children present (after 17 years of marriage).

In 1921 Thomas Hale (b.1880) and Margaret (born London, 1875) are still in Birkenhead with Annie Louise (b.1905) and Margaret Irene (b.1908).

Edward was staying with Richard and Esther in 1891, but name recorded as Hall, not Hale.
Ted lost one of his hands in the first world war. However, the house he lived in until his death in about 1946 or 47 had a garden of about 1/3 of an acre. How he managed to look after it, was simply amazing.
When he died, his estate was left to his younger sister Agnes, indicating he had no children

Her grandmother Esther Brereton left Agnes £200 in her will when she died in 1917.
