  The parish of Threapwood was formed in 1817, from parts of the parishes of Worthenbury, in Flintshire, and Malpas, in Cheshire.

Martha's father was Richard Jones and her mother was Sarah Brereton. Her maternal grandparents were Richard Brereton and (Elizabeth) Ellen Lea. She had four brothers and four sisters, named George, Richard, John, Thomas, Mary, Ann, Ester and Elizabeth. She was the third oldest of the nine known children.
