Lives with: Isaac, aged 82 was living with Abraham & Alice Settle and family in 1841. Abraham reported his death the following year.
Neighbor: Joseph Mather (farmer) and Elizabeth were at Higher Know Mill, with Abraham and Alice Settle (nee Mather) with their father Isaac (aged 80) at Know Mill, Edgworth in 1841. With the absence of baptism records for this period, Its is therefore assumed Alice and Joseph are siblings.
Relative of: Grandson
Neighbor: Isaac (weaver) was alive in 1841 at Know Mills, Edgworth, with his daughter Alice Settle (b.1801). He died the following year. Neighbours at Higher Know Mills were farmer Joseph & Elizabeth Mather (40 & 35) and family.
Employee of: Alice and Margaret (Hargreves) wiere with Solomon in 1841 and 1851 Working as cook for her father Solomon (a publican) in 1851 in Little Bolton. She was also recorded as from Little Bolton when she married Joseph Beddows the following year.
Lives with: Sarah A Mather (niece) was living with Susanna and Dennis Leach in Rhode Island, USA in 1865 and 1880
Other: DOUBLE Marriage: Isaac and sister Alice had a double marriege, both marrying their partners at St Peter's on 4 April 1836
Other: Ann and Esther had a double marriage. They both married an Isharwood on 4-Sep-1811 at St Peter's, Bolton
Relative of: Son B.M. has 30 cM match to John Eastaugh
Relative of: John Eastaugh is the 4x great grandson of Ann Mather, confirmed by DNA matches
Lives with: In 1861, step-daughter Margaret Hardman (24) and her grandmother Mary (i.e. Mally), described as Mother-in-law, were living with Joseph and Alice Knight. In 1863, Joseph and Elizabeth Alice Knight were witness when Margaret Hardman married Thomas Hopkins.
Lives with: In 1871, Thomas E Hopkins (24) was with his mother, living at his grandmother's Alice Knight (76)
Relative of: 22 cM DNA match to John Eastaugh

1812 - 1838
Betty
Garside

26
1836 - 1837
Fanny
Mather
1
1
Fanny was probably named after Isaac's youngest sister, Fanny born 5 years earlier (also baptised at Edgworth Independant).
Fammy died Sep 1842 (registered Bury), aged 1. However there is a Fanny Mather aged 7 with Thomas and Ann Mather in 1841, but this is another (unrelated).
1815 - <1898
Sarah
Smith
83
83
Sarah's father was Henry Smith from Edgworth, a Mason.
Sarah and Isaac were recorded at Southbridge, Worcester, Massachusetts, USA in 1850 with their first four children, all born in the US, so they must have emigrated before 1842, so soon after they married (they cant be found on the UK 1841 census).
Sarah possibly died 16 Aug 1856 in Rhode Island, and Isaac remarried another Sarah in the US. This would also explain why daughter Sarah Alice went to live with her aunt Susannah. Alternatively the family may have broken up and Sarah returned to the UK as a Sarah Mather was living with her brother-in-law James Smith (b.1800) in 1851 at 31 Rothwell St. or could this be another? Something happened, as her daughter Sarah Alice seems to have been adopted by her sister Susanna. Isaac’s newspaper obituary does say that Isaac married again in the US.
Isaac is back with (another younger?) Sarah in 1880, but no children present. Sarah (63) and Isaac (69) are at Rhode Island, USA.
When his son James died, the informant recorded his mother's name as Margaret Smith. This is assumed to be an error as there is no such marriage (UK or US).
1791 - 1863
Mary
(Mally)
Grime
72
72
Lived at Brown St, Edgworth.
Mary is sometimes knows as "Mally", a Scottish or Northern England nickname.
1812 - 1898
Isaac
Mather
86
86
4 Sep 1812, Isaac was baptised the son of Solomon and Mally Mather of Edgworth. He was baptised with his baby cousin Alice Waddiker (Mally's sister Alice'e daughter)
In 1839, Isaac, son of Solomon, a mechanic from Edgworth
was a widower when he married Sarah Smith. He was NOT in Montgomery, PA - That is another.
About 1840, Isaac and Sarah (nee Smith) moved to the USA. Daughter Mary was buried there in 1840.
In 1851, Isaac and Sarah (both 37) are at Southbridge, Worcester, Massachusetts, USA with William H (8), Elisabeth (6), James A (4), and Susannah (2).
In 1870, Isaac and Sarah (60 & 54) are at Warwick, Kent, Rhode Island.
In 1880, Isaac and Sarah (69 & 63) were at Warrick, Kent, Rhode Island. This Sarah was his third wife, married in Bolton in 1839.
Isaac from Edgworth has been reported by some as born 27 Oct 1799 (this is an error), died 1898 (aged 99) who married three times, the last marriage being Sarah Langford (also wrong), before they emigrated to the USA. This Isaac was already in the US by 1850, and was actually born 1812, which explains why he was so fit at 99. Sarah Langford actually married Morgan Pender in Q3/1838, while another Isaac Mathers married Esther Kershaw, both at Manchester.
1814 - 1895
Alice
Mather
81
81
In 1841, Alice Hargreaves (25, F.S.) was living at Crownpoint, Edgworth, with her daughter Margaret (4) and parents Solomon and Mally (both 50).
In 1851, Alice was working as cook for father Solomon (a publican). She was recorded as from Little Bolton when she married Joseph Beddows the following year.
15 Dec 1852, Alice Hargreves (daughter of Solomon Mather, publican) married Joseph Beddows at St George, Little Bolton.
Alice was missing in 1861
In 1871, Joseph and Alice were at the Boars Head, Bolton, so it seems Alice kept her fathers business going as an Inn Keeper.
1812 - 1840
Jabez
Hargreaves
28
28
Not the Jazez Hargreves from Newchurch in Pendle, who married Mary and had children Thomas, Susannah, Eliz and Michael (1837 - 1845)
1829
Amos
Mather
Amos Mather was born 2 March 1829 and baptised 30 May, the son of Solomon and Mally Mather of Edgworth
There is another Amos Mather, 4 years younger, born 1838, the son of James and Martha who married Ann Briggs. Another Amos b.1838, son of Thomas, married Hannah Hullock in Q2/1863 at Walmsley Christ church. The other Amos married Ann Briggs at Bolton St Peter the same year.
What happened to Amos? Amos Meader (born 9 Aug 1832) and buried 1899 in Clinton, NY is another person. He may have died an infant!
In Sep 1870, there is a marriage between Amos Mather and Margaret Howarth at Blackburn. This Amos was born about 1843 at Mellor, Blackburn and died there in 1892
1836
Margaret
Hargreaves
In 1851, Margaret (14) was with her widowed mother Alice Hargreaves (36) and Solomon Mather at the Talbot pub, Brown Street, Little Bolton.
In 1861, step-daughter Margaret Hardman (24) and her grandmother Mary (i.e. Mally), described as mother-in-law, were living with Joseph and Alice Knight.
In 1863, Margaret (from Edgworth) appears to have married Thomas Hopkins and had two children. Census records are consistent with her from Edgworth (before and after marriage).
There is also a marriage in 1870 for a single Margaret Hargreaves, father Jabez, who married John Russell at St Peter's Manchester. Either this is a bigamous marriage or there are two Margarets with father called Jabez! There are no census records for this Margaret from Edgworth, so this must be another!
John
Russell
father's name: Thomas Russell
1809 - 1884
Joseph
Knight
75
75
In 1861, Joseph and Alice Knight (52 & 46) were at 63 Haydock Street, Little Bolton with Margaret Hadrman (sep-daughter) and Mary Mather (71, Mother-in-law) formerly Mally Grime.
In 1863, Joseph and Elizabeth Alice Knight were witness when Margaret Hardman married Thomas Hopkins.
In 1871, Joseph and Alice were at the Boars Head, Bolton, so it seems Alice kept her fathers business going as an Inn Keeper.
1819 - 1856
Joseph
Beddows
36
36
Joseph married Alice Hargreved (nee Mather) in 1852 when he was a Millwright.
Alice's father Solomon Mather was a publican in 1851, and it is just possible that so was Joseph Beddows. Probate for Joseph Beddows who died in 1858 (not 1856 as this one did) shows he died at the Black Greyhound", Horwich. This Joseph was buried at Horwich Holy Trinity in Jun 1856!.
Possibly born Hindley, as a Joseph Beddows, widower, age 30, was lodging at 13 Gas Street in 1851 with Grime and Pendlebury families.
1833
Thomas
Hopkins
27 Aug 1863, Thomas Hopkins (Ful agel, Pattern Maker, Bachelor, Little Bolton) married Margaret Hargreaves. Thomas's father was William Hopkins, a Pattern Maker.

Alice
Fielding
Possibly Alice is the daughter of John and Susan Fielding from Milnrow (E of Rochdale), but that isnt Bolton Parish, which is where she was from when married. Alice from Adlington, born 2 Sep 1759 is more likely as closer age match to Isaac, and also correct parish.
There is a 21cM DNA connection via Alice's brother Abraham Fielding (both children of J Fielden/Fielding) to John Eastaugh.
In 1791 when Ann was baptised, Alice Mather (nee Fielding) and Isaac were living at Toppings, Turton.
1791 - 1849
Abraham
Settle
58
58
Settle indexed as "Senle" and "Fettle" on 1841 census. Joseph Mather (farmer, 40) and Elizabeth were at Higher Know Mill, Edgworth with Abraham and Alice Settle (nee Mather) and their father Isaac (aged 80) at Know Mill. With the absence of baptism records for this period, Its is therefore assumed Alice and Joseph are siblings.
1801 - 1863
Alice

62
62
1841, Abraham (45, Bleacher) and Alice Settle (40) were at Know Mills, Edgworth with William (15), John (12) and Alice (5), and Alice's father Isaac Mather (80).
1861, Alice Settle (60) was at Edgworth with Rachel Mather (73), both Washerwomen. Ann also had her daughter Elizabeth (18) with her.

30
30
In 1861, Elizabeth (18) was still with her mother. She did not marry (not between 1861-1871)
In 1871, Elizabeth Settle (28) was an inmate in the Salford Union Workhouse.
Elizabeth died in 1874, aged only 31 (recorded as 29)
Elizabeth didnt marry Abraham Higginson in 1880. That Elizabeth was the daughter or Thomas Whitehead.
1822 - 1892
Stephen
Settle
69
69
In 1849, Stephen a Grocer at Strangeways, Manchester, son of Abraham a farmer, married Jane Howe at Manchester
In 1851, Stephen, a Grocer and Tea Dealer, born Entwistle (28) and Jane (27) had their son William (1), two apprentices and a house servant living at Gt Ducie Street, Cheetham, Lancashire
1760 - 1842
Isaac
Mather
82
82
Isaac was born in Turton, late 1759 or early 1760, before his parents Ann and Richard were married. There are no other Richard and Ann marriages in Lancashire around this time! A 1760 birth is consistent with his 1842 death, aged 82.
16 Nov 1763, Isaac “child of Richard Mather & Ann (formerly Howarth)” was baptised at Walmsley Meeting House, Bolton le Moors. This was after his parents had married and also after the baptism of his older brother James at Bank Street (Presbyterian), Bolton.
4 Jan 1787, Isaac Mather, a weaver married Alice Fielding, a spinster at St Peter's, Bolton. Neither could sign their name.
About 1787, their first son James was born and was later a farmer at Entwistle. Solomon born 1798 is probably also their son (as know to be born at Toppings), and named after his brother. Neither have baptism records.
Daughters Ann, born Dec 1790 and Esther born March 1792 were baptised at Walmsley Presbyterian Meeting House. Parents “Isaac Mather and Alice (formerly Fielding)” were named and were living at Toppings, Turton.
From 1794 to 1815 the Walmsley baptism records are lost. However, Joseph born 1798 and Alice born 1801 are believed to be theirs and known to be born in Turton. They were neighbours farming at Higher Know Mill, and Isaac was also living there with Alice before he died.
In 1803, Nancy Mather was probably Isaac and Alice’s last child. Census records confirm Nancy was born in Turton and was living at Toppings Road, Turton in 1861, 1871 and 1881.
4 Jan 1815, Isaac Mather was witness to the marriage of James Grime and Jane Hardman. It was James Grime and Isaac's son Solomon (and others) that were transported for 14 years in 1819.
In 1841, Isaac Mather (80, weaver) was at Know Mills, Edgworth, with his married daughter Alice Settle (b.1801). He died the following year. Neighbours at Higher Know Mills were farmer Joseph & Elizabeth Mather (40 & 35) and family (his assumed son).
Isaac died of Old Age 19 Feb 1842. He was still with his daughter and son-in-law Abraham Settle, Occupier, who reported his death.

72
72
According to James A Mather's death cert, he was a printer.
One the PA death record, his mother is named as Margaret Smith, not Sarah Smith. The informant (Mrs Mary Mather) must have got it wrong (Sarah had died 22y earlier)
James A Mather had a son James Edward Mather and through him there is a DNA match to Paul Mather and John Eastaugh (but not me).
1854 - 1923
Sarah
Alice
Mather
69
69
Sarah was born at Rhode Island, and for many years was brought up by uncle and aunt Dennis and Susanna Leach.
Sarah married Edward Creighton of Scottish descent in 1882 (had been married 18 years in 1900).
The 1900 census is a bit odd. Sarah was aged 46, yet had been in the US for 50 years.
There was come confusion as to where Sarah was born. On the 1923 death record her mother is shows correctly as Sarah Smith, but the father Isaac Creighton, her merried name (not Isaac Mather). The 1900 census shows birthplace as Ireland, but should be Rhode Island.
In 1894, Dennis Leache's estate was left to his daughter Elizabeth Manning and Sarah Alice Leighton, wife of Edward Creighton, so Sarah's middle name is Alice!

WARNING: Another family; Richard Mather married Mary Scowcroft in 1844 and had Robert (1845) and 3 daughters Frances, Esther and Alice (registered Bury N).
There are several (4) Solomon Mathers in our tree, and not all are related. This Solomon was a printer (not painter) at Elton near Bury, so it was likely he was. However, his family appears to have originated from Blackburn.
In 1841, Solomon and Jane (both 20) are at Part of Elton Fold, Elton, Bury with Elizabeth (2) and Mary (10mo).
Coalheaver in 1851
Printer in 1858 - 1863
Block Printer in 1866 - 1868
Labourer (at Iron Foundry) in 1870 and 1871
Driller in 1878
In 1836 Solomon and Jane lived at 68 Victoria Street, Elton. Jane may have been spending too much on fashion (see news clip) as Solomon had to stop her credit.
In 1871, Solomon (52, Widower) was with still with his daughter Rachel (13) at Elton. All the other daughters had married. John Hampson (33, maried) was a visitor.
1820
James
Mather
In 1836, James was witness to Alice's marriage to Jabez. He would be only 16 if born 1820 (so possibly not this James, although there is no age limit).
18 Oct 1840, James Mather, a printer, son of Solomon a Joiner married Maria Carruthers, daughter of John Carruthers, a butcher. They were living at Whitefield.
No baptism for James, which is perhaps not surprising as he was probably illegitimate. Solomon father was a Publican in 1873. However, this Solomon was in Jail in 1822 when James was Born !!
There is a James Mather (16) in Newchurch, Haslingden in 1841 with Fanny (possibly Mary his Mother) and two siblings, Elizabeth (20), and Alice (13).
In 1839, another James Mather married Mary Barrisford at Eccles. It is this James that had daughters Mary (b.1843) and Sarah Ann (b.Dec 1852)
In 1841, James and Maria (both 20) are at Cabbage Row, Radcliffe with daughter Martha (7 mo).
In Feb 1873, James (51, Widow), a General Dealer of Avenua Parade, Accrington, son of Solomon Mather a Publican married Mary Murgatroyd. This cant be the same James Hardware Dealer (born ca.1812 L.B. and married to Mary from Leeds, as they are both on the census in 1871 and 1881.
1826
Mary
Murgatroyd
In 1873, Mary (47, spinster) from the Burnley Road, daughter of William Murgatroyd a wool sorter married James Mather (51).

Martha
Mather
Martha (7 months) was with her parents James and Maria at Cabbage Row, Radcliffe in 1841.
There appears to be no Lancashire death, so she either relocated (maybe died Cheetham, Manchester 1882) or married.
1831
Fanny
Mather
There's a Fanny Mather, born 22 Oct 1835 (Dau of John and Mary) and baptised at Prestwich, Lancashire, who is probably the person who married Richard Hodson in 1863.
There is also a Fanny Mather, aged 7 in 1841, daughter of Thomas and Betty of Little Bolton.

Esther

68
68
Esther married Benjamin (aka Bennett) Isherwood of Bolton Parish, Weaver on 4 Sep 1811. She was only 19 and a half. She went on to have 10 children, the last (Alice) in 1838, aged 46. It was a double marriage with her sister Ann marrying Ralph Isherwood the same day.
Sisters Ann and Esther married two Isherwood (second cousins?) on the same day 4 Sep 1811.
In 1841, Bennett & Esther Isherwood (50 & 45) were at Nuttall, Holcombe with Ann and Jane (12 & 10).
In 1851, Esther (59, head) was living with her extended familiy st Nuttall, Tottongton.
1790 - 1875
Ann
Mather
84
84
This Ann did not have had an illegitimate son James Mather born in April 1811. James was baptised as son of Ann Mather at Walmsley 5 months before she married Ralph and Mary was born before September
Ann married Ralph Isherwood (1811) or Thomas Horrocks (1817) in Bolton or Isaac Turner (1813) in Deane (but no match for Turton 1801-1818). Actually sisters Ann and Esther married two Isherwood cousins? on the same day 4 Sep 1811. It may have been a shotgun wedding as Mary was baptised 2 weeks later.
Another possibility is in 1838 Ann Mather, dau of Isaac Mather of Edgworth married John Nelson, a shoe maker of Edgworth.
In 1851, Ann (60, Head, Wid) and 7 children (one probably a grandchild, 8wks) are living in Peters Street, Preston.
1779 - 1843
Henry

64
Henry and Betty lived at Tottington after they married, and moved to Elton about 1805 where Henry was a Shopkeeper.
Henry and betty probably moved away from Elton to Bolton. Daughters Sarah and Susannah were married at Bolton.
Henry must have retired and moved to Lymm in Cheshire, The burial, aged 64, at his home villiage of Tottington records Lymm as his last abode.

There is another Susanna and Martha Smith, daughters of Betty & Jacob who were in the 1841 Bury census.

75
75
Dennis is the son of Thomas Leach.
Dennis Leach emigrated to USA. He arrived in New York from Liverpool on the Queen of the West 13-Dec-1844 and Nationalised 13-Jan-1853
Dennis's estate was left to his daughter Elizabeth Manning and Sarah Alice Leighton, wife of Edward Creighton. Dennis's wif must have been devistated, and died shortly after in April 1894.
1843
Elizabeth
Leach
Elizabeth married Emmet P Manning in 1875.
They had Clark R (b.1869) and Clara aka Daisy (b.1871), before they were married it appears!

Joseph
Mather
83
83
In 1841, Joseph Mather (farmer) and Elizabeth were at Higher Know Mill, with Abraham and Alice Settle (nee Mather) and their father Isaac (aged 80). With the absence of baptism records for this period, Its is therefore assumed Alice and Joseph are siblings.
Son Charles had left home by 1851 (missing) to live in Horwich and in 1856 James, a Goods Porter of Horwich, son of Joseph a farmer married Betty Crook, daughter of Daniel.
In 1851, Joseph, an Agricultural labourer, and Betty (52 & 49) were at Guide Post, Turton with Elizabeth (24), Sophia (22), Frances (19), Alice (16), Jane (14), John (12), Joseph (10), James (8) and Sarah Ann (5). Dorothy Cooper (16) was also with them.
In 1858, Joseph was a Publican and Farmer when daughter Alice married.
In 1861, Joseph and Betty (63 & 57) were still farming 4 acres, at Bromley Cross, Turton, and Joseph was also a beerseller. He is listed at the Railway Hotel, Bromiley Cross, Turton in Worrall's Trade Directory. At the same time, John Kay was a farmer at Mather fold and also a beer retailer at Cox green.
In 1871, Joseph and Betty (73 & 66) were farming 24 acres of land at Lower House, Turton. They had their spinster daughter Frances with them.
In 1881 Joseph died a Gentleman "formerly of Turton but late of Breightmet".
1787 - 1841
James
Mather
54
54
James was born about 9 months after his parents married (before Sept if 54 when died)..
James & Rachel have a DNA match to Paul Mather, but NOT me.
James's first son is also James, and both were farmers at Entwistle, probably the same farm !
In 1804, a Private James Mather, enlisted in the army, aged about 18. He was discharged in 1818. This is another!
Weaver when children got baptised (e.g. Charles).
In Jun 1841, James and Rachel (both 54) are farmers at Sunnyside, Entwistle. Also shown as farmer from Entwistle on son Isaac's marriage in 1839 (so possibly the wrong marriage). With them were their younger children Nancy, Jane, Sarah, Andrew and Maria (24, 22, 18, 17, & 11), and also two illegitimate grandchildren Abel and John (5mo & 1mo).
3 Sep 1841, James Mather died of paralysis (i.e. stroke). Jenny Mather of Entwistle was present at the death (of her father).
In 1892, his youngest daughter Maria remaried (aged 63). She recorded her father as John (not James) Mather, a Farmer.

Samuel from Entwistle and Nancy Mather from the Turton Mather family of Toppings. Most likely the daiughter of Solomon and Martha (or possibly Isaac & Nancy). In 1881 Nancy's son George had niece Ann Mather (16) living with him. This suggests Nancy is the daughter of Isaac.
Nancy Mather had an illegitimate daughter Eliza born 1819. It may be this Nancy (tbc).
In 1841, Samuel and Nancy (both 35) were at Chapel Town, Turton with John (10), Elizabeth (5) and George (3). Chapeltown is 1 mile SW of Edgwoth and 1.5 miles NE of Topppings, Turton.
In 1851, Samuel and Nancy (47 & 48) were at Chapel Town, Turton with John (20), Elizabeth (16), George (12), and Ann (9)
Nancy & Samuel Kay moved to Tottington (close) and had Kitty, Elizabeth and Alice.
In 1871, Samuel and Nancy (69 & 68) were at Toppings, Turton with daughter Ann (29). Her son John Kay was a neighbour.
In 1881, Nancy Kay (78) was living with her spinster daughter Ann (39) at 161 Toppings Road, Turton.
Nancy died Nov 1882, aged 79

Catherine
Mather
Catherine was born about 1826.
There is no baptism for Catherine, but she may have been the daughter of William and Hannah (as in 1833 their son William named his first daughter Catherine). Also brother Solomon has a Catherine in 1809. It is also likely she was illegitimate as her assumed sister (or twin) Betty was.
In 1841, Catherine (15) was the youngest of 5 servants working at the Lower House, Toppings, Turton for Eliza Winder. Lower House is near to the Volunteer Inn at Toppings. She probably was Betty Mather's sister, who was a servant the Volunteer Inn (just across the field).
In 1841, her assumed sister Betty Mather (same age) was living nearby with James and Betty Booth nee Mather and he was also a painter. However, they were from Eccleston at the time of marriage.
23 Nov 1845, Catherine Mather, a miner, daughter of Solomon Mather, farmer, married John Jones, both of Tebbutt Street at Manchester Church.
5 Sep 1852, Catherine (24, daughter of Thomas Mather, labourer) married William Deane, aged 22 a painter at Farnworth. This cant be her was this Catherine was born 1828.
In 1881, Catherine was a widow at 4 Eagly Bank Park Terrace with 6 children.
1789 - 1854
Solomon
Mather
64
64
There is no baptism record for this Solomon. We know he was born 1789 in Turton from his death record (aged 64) and census returns. However it is unlikely he is the son of the other Solomon from Turton who married Martha in 1790, as there are early Turton baptism records for his children, Betty and James in 1791 and 1792. Therefore, this Solomon is more likely to be the son of one of his brothers, most likely Isaac. This would also explain the name of their first son Isaac in 1812 and the 4 year gap in birth after they married.
9 Aug 1909, Solomon Mather, a weaver, married Mary Grime.
20 Mar 1819, Solomon was charged at Lancaster Assized for issuing forged one pound bank note at Bolton and similar offence at Sharples.
Solomon's wife was Mary Grime. The Manchester Mercury (Tue 6 Apr 1819) records Peter Howcroft, William Entwistle, James Grime, Solomon Mather (and others) were all transported for 14 years for having forged bank notes. The Lancaster Gazette also shows Solomon was aged 29, so this is him! This is also listed in the England and Wales Criminal Register. Solomon was released after 6 of his 14 year sentence and returned to his wife Mary where it appears he had two more children after a 15 year gap.
1829 - 1830 Amos and Fanny are born and baptised at Edgworth Independent, and after that there's no trace of Amos.
in 1839 when Isaac married, he recorded his father Solomon as a Mechanic.
In 1841, Solomon and Mally were at Crownpoint, Edgworth, Solomon an Ag. Labourer. They had daughter Alice Hargreaves (25, F.S.) and her daughter Margret (4) with them.
30 Sep 1848, The Manchester Examiner records that the Licence of the Dog (Inn) in Brown Street was transferred from Thomas Sawdon to Solomon Mather.
In 1849: Solomon never learned his lessons. He was sent down again for 6 months with hard labour for keeping a disorderly house at John Street, Bury (probably the Talbot Inn).
Solomon and Mally were alive in 1851, with Solomon a Publican at the Talbot, 18 Brown Street, L.B. He had his daughter Alice Hargreaves with him working as the Cook. John and Elizabeth Mather (both born about 1808) were also at Brown Street in 1841, so may be related. Alice remarried in Dec 1852, also showing Solomon as a publican.
In 1853, Solomon is shown at the Talbot Inn (Old Dog), 18 Brown Street in the Whellan & Co Trade Directory. James Grime (probably related to his wife Mary Grime) was at the Wagon and Horses, 172 Blackburn Street, Little Bolton. His son Isaac also had a Beer House at Edgworth.
Solomon left a Will, probate dated 29 Apr 1854, where he is described as an Inn Keeper. The Talbot Inn (also known as the Old Dog) closed in 1879.
Solomon's death in April 1854 was reported in the Bolton Chronicle: "On the 13th inst., very suddenly, Mr Solomon Mather of the Talbot Inn, Brown Street, Little Bolton." The Inn was a working man’s pub, and a meeting place for Bolton's "Radicals".

Betty
Mather
Not sure what happened to Betty, the daughter of Solomon. No death records, and no marriages with Solomon named. Most probably married John Bayley in 1830 (both single) as their daughter Alice was baptised at Edgworth:
4 June 1830, John Bayley married Betty Mather. Their witness was Lawrence Wroe. Two years later, Lawrence Roe married Maria Knowles. Lawrence who was Irish and Maria (both born about 1810) lived in Pilkington in 1841 when Lawrence and Maria were neighbours of John and Mary Mather nee Johnson (20 & 30), so perhaps Betty had a brother John.
1803
John
Settle
John was a miner (collier) at Haulgh and Little Bolton when the first children were baptised. In 1838 - 1840 John and Betty are shown at Little Lever.
In 1841, John and Betty Settle (both 35) were at Hall Lane, Little Lever with Peter (15), John (13), Nancy (10), Alice (3) and Richard (2).
Betty died and John married Alice Meadows in 1849 at Manchester Cathederal.
In 1851 John and Alice (48 & 53) were farming 48 acres at Little Lever with Alice, Richard and Elizabeth (13, 10 and 8) and three step-daughters; Mary, Martha and Catherine (17, 13 & 4).
In 1861 John and Alice (58 & 64) nee MANN were at Little Lever with daughter Catherine (14).

23 Nov 1845, John Jones, a Print Finisher, son of Thomas a Butler married Catherine Mather, a miner, daughter of Solomon Mather, both of Tebbutt Street at Manchester Church. Eleanor Jones (sister?) was a witness.
After they married John and Catherine lived in Turton. All their childrens births are registered there, except for 1856-1859 when they were in Shaprles.
In 1851, John and Catherine Jones were at 4 Bank View, Turton with John's mother Betty (50, widow) and Ellen, Thomas and Elizabeth (5, 3 & 11mo).
In 1871, John B Jones and Catherine (46 & 45) were with Eleanor (25), Thomas (23), Elizabeth (21), Alice (18), William H (15), Edward (13), Frederick (10), Mary (6) and Ernest (3) at Eagley, Tyrton.

John is probably the son of Isaac or Solomon, both of Turton. There is a 6 year gap where Isaac and Alice probably had children (and baptism records are missing)
John Mather born about 1795 died at Edgworth and buried 11 May, 1817 at St. Ann's, aged 22. This may be a missing family member.
2 March 1817, John Mather, labourer, married Mary McQuire at St. Peter's Bolton. Their witness was James Bromiley. Marriage or Mary's cooking! didn't agree with John. He was married in March and died in May!
Did John and Mary have a son? John Mather, son of John and Mary Mather of Bradshaw died Nov 1825, aged 8 so could be his son, although no reference to John deceased or Mary's new married name. Son John's baptism does confirm John was a labourer.
