George was born in 1821 in Turton and his baptism took place there on December 23rd, 1821.1  George's father was Edward Mather and his mother was Ann Brambley.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Alice Entwistle. He had two brothers and four sisters, named James, Charles, Alice, Susannah, Susannah and Nancy. He had an adopted sister named Mally.
