Robert was born in July 1901 in Bolton and his baptism took place on October 10th, 1901 at St. George (Little Bolton).1 2  Robert's father was John Joseph Mather and his mother was Fanny Nuttall.  His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Jane Lever. He had a brother named William.  He was the younger of the two children.
