Leslie's father was William Rigby and his mother was Mary Buck. His paternal grandparents were John Rigby and Ellen Rigby; his maternal grandparents were William Buck and Ellen (Alice) Ann Mather. He had three brothers named Arnold, Clifford and Kenneth. He was the youngest of the four children.
