Frederick was born in December 1882 in Shipley.1 Frederick's father was Tom Pickles and his mother was Mary Ann Mara Briggs. His paternal grandparents were William Cockshutt Pickles and Mary Ickeringill; his maternal grandparents were William Henry Briggs and Ann Harman. He had two brothers named William and Harry.
