Margaret was born in September 1837 in Little Neston and her baptism took place on August 4th, 1837 in Neston.1 2  Margaret's father was Joseph Oxton and her mother was Rachel Williams.  Her maternal grandparents were Samuel Williams and Ann Millington. She had six brothers and four sisters, named Joseph, William, Joseph, John, George, Thomas, Anne, Alice, Mary and Rachel.  She was the fifth youngest of the eleven children.
