Joseph's father was Edward Charles Owen and his mother was Annie Roberts. His maternal grandparents were Ellis Roberts and Ann (Annie) Jellicoe. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Samuel, Charles, James, Herbert, Bertha, Sylvia and Ivy. He was the sixth oldest of the eight children. He died in 1919.
