Richard was born in January 1801 in Billinge and his baptism took place on January 25th, 1801 at St. Aidan (Billinge).1  Richard's father was Henry Mather and his mother was Betty Anderton.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Hannah Cross. He had six brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, John, Richard, Henry, James, James, Mary, Hannah and Hannah.  He was the fifth youngest of the ten children.
