John was born in January 1796 in Billinge and his baptism took place on January 10th, 1796 at St. Aidan (Billinge).1  John's father was Henry Mather and his mother was Betty Anderton.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Hannah Cross. He had six brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Richard, Richard, Henry, James, James, Mary, Hannah and Hannah.  He was the fourth oldest of the ten children.
