Mary was born in June 1789 in Billinge and her baptism took place on June 7th, 1789 at St. Aidan (Billinge).1  Mary's father was Henry Mather and her mother was Betty Anderton.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Hannah Cross. She had seven brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, John, Richard, Richard, Henry, James, James, Hannah and Hannah.  She was the oldest of the ten children.
