Henry's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Hannah Cross.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Hannah Rawlinson. He had four brothers and six sisters, named John, Thomas, Isaac, Richard, Betty, Betty, Hannah, Margaret, Ellen and Alice.  He was the third oldest of the eleven children.
