Richard was born in 1779 in Billinge and his baptism took place on February 14th, 1779 at St. Aidan (Billinge).1  Richard's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Hannah Cross.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Hannah Rawlinson. He had four brothers and six sisters, named John, Henry, Thomas, Isaac, Betty, Betty, Hannah, Margaret, Ellen and Alice.  He was the nineth oldest of the eleven children.
