Margaret's father was James Mather and her mother was Elizabeth Ratcliffe. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Amy (Amey or Emy) Worsley. She had three brothers and six sisters, named Isaac, Thomas, Nathan, Mary, Ellen, Sarah, Ann, Alice and Elizabeth. She was the fourth oldest of the ten children.
