Alice's father was James Mather and her mother was Elizabeth Ratcliffe. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Amy (Amey or Emy) Worsley. She had three brothers and six sisters, named Isaac, Thomas, Nathan, Mary, Ellen, Sarah, Margaret, Ann and Elizabeth. She was the seventh oldest of the ten children.

- 28 April 1882, Alice Mather (22), daughter of James a labourer of Adlington married William Walmsley (22), son of Richard a farmer. She was actually aged 17 and under-age.
