Elizabeth's father was James Mather and her mother was Elizabeth Ratcliffe. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Amy (Amey or Emy) Worsley. She had three brothers and six sisters, named Isaac, Thomas, Nathan, Mary, Ellen, Sarah, Margaret, Ann and Alice. She was the youngest of the ten children.
