James was born on March 11th, 1819 in Whitefield.1  James' father was Jesse Mather and his mother was Hannah Emmerson.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Margaret Scholes. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named Robert, Joseph, Nathan, Aaron, Betty, Ellen, Hannah, Mary, Sarah, Rachel and Leah. He had an adopted sister named Esther.  He died at the age of 75 on July 21st, 1894 in Whitefield.  He was buried in July 1894 in Stand.2

‌James and Eliza were married in a religious ceremony on January 9th, 1843 at St. Leonard (Middleton).4   They had three daughters named Hannah, Mary and Alice.  There are no more children.
