James was born on May 1st, 1795 in Wheelton and his baptism took place on June 7th, 1795 at St. Laurence (Chorley).

Birth Notes

James' father was Ralph Mather and his mother was Ann Clarkson. His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Esther Mason; his maternal grandparents were Peter Clarkson and Ann Constantine. He had two brothers and six sisters, named John, Alexander, Jane, Mary, Sarah, Betty, Peggy and Ann. He was the second oldest of the nine known children. He died at the age of 62 in May 1857 in Withnell. He was buried on June 14th, 1857 in Withnell.
