Esther was born on April 26th, 1849 in Heap and her baptism took place on June 17th, 1849 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Bury).1 2  Esther's father was Richard Mather and her mother was Mary Scowcroft.  Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Evans. She had a brother and two sisters, named Robert, Frances and Alice. She had an adopted brother named Thomas. She had a half-brother and four half-sisters, named William, Ann, Mary, Sarah and Sarah.
