Mary was born on December 15th, 1832 in Walmersley and her baptism took place on December 30th, 1832 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Bury).1 2  Mary's father was Richard Mather and her mother was Hannah Sharples.  Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Evans. She had a brother and three sisters, named William, Ann, Sarah and Sarah.  She was the third oldest of the five children. She had two half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Thomas, Robert, Frances, Esther and Alice.
