William Mather

William was born on December 6th, 1829 in Haslingden and his baptism took place on December 6th, 1829 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Bury).¹²

  There is a Haslington in Cheshire, but this must be Haslingden (near
  Rawtenstall and Rossendale), North Bury if Lancashire.
  
  This may be the William Mather, son of Richard Mather and Hannah Sharples, born Tottington. However, that Richard is believed to have died in Bury in 1879, and Tottington is 6 miles South of Haslingden.

William's father was Richard Mather and his mother was Hannah Sharples. His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Evans. He had four sisters named Ann, Mary, Sarah and Sarah. He was the oldest of the five children. He had two half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Thomas, Robert, Frances, Esther and Alice. He died at the age of 67 in December 1896 in Farnworth. His burial was on December 2nd, 1896 at the St. James (New Bury).³

- Died after 1891. This burial age is 2 years out, but most likely as wife Margared also buried here. Age 69 is a transcription error and should be 67.

General Notes
- William, son of Richard from Haslingden. Probably not the son of Richard and Hannah Knowles from Tottington, North Bury, as 6 miles South of Haslingden, and they were probably too old. Richard Mather and Hannah Sharples from Pigslee is a better match.
  
  In 1841, William (12) and his siblings were with his father Richard (30) a fuller and grandparents James and Mary (both 65) at Walmersley. at Pigslee Bridge.
  
  29 Dec 1852, William (22) son of Richard Mather married Margaret Gerrard (22), daughter of Thomas Gerrard at St John The Evangelist, Farnworth & Kearsley Parish Church.
  
  In 1871, William and Margaret (both 41) were in Farnworth with Andrew (15), Hannah (8), Jane (3) and Esther (3 mo)
  
  In 1881, William Mather (57) was a Canal Boatman living at Farnworth with Margaret (57), Hannah (18) and Jane (13).
  
  In 1891 William Mather (61, Wid) was a colliery banksman living with his son-in-law James Howcroft. Jane had left home.
  
  In 1896, William died at Farnworth Hospital, aged 67.
