Eliza's father was William Mather and her mother was Eliza Graham. Her paternal grandparents were Nathaniel (Nathan) Mather and Alice Brooks. She had four brothers and six sisters, named John, Joseph, Alfred, Fred, Hannah, Jane, Polly, Alice, Marion and Martha. She was the nineth oldest of the eleven children.
