Sarah's father was Thomas Lea and her mother was Elizabeth Brereton. Her paternal grandparents were William Lea and Jane Stubbs; her maternal grandparents were Thomas Brereton and Martha Hughes. She had six brothers and two sisters, named William, Charles, John, Thomas, William, Arthur, Jane and Emily. She was the fifth oldest of the nine children. She died at the age of 2 in March 1872 in Harthill.²
