Charles' father was Thomas Lea and his mother was Elizabeth Brereton. His paternal grandparents were William Lea and Jane Stubbs; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Brereton and Martha Hughes. He had five brothers and three sisters, named William, John, Thomas, William, Arthur, Jane, Sarah and Emily. He was the third oldest of the nine children.
