Jane's father was Thomas Lea and her mother was Elizabeth Brereton. Her paternal grandparents were William Lea and Jane Stubbs; her maternal grandparents were Thomas Brereton and Martha Hughes. She had six brothers and two sisters, named William, Charles, John, Thomas, William, Arthur, Sarah and Emily. She was the second oldest of the nine children.
