John's father was John Isherwood and his mother was Betty Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Betty Flitcroft. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named James, Thomas, James, John, Harry, William, Richard, Betty and Mally.  He was the youngest of the ten known children.
