John's father was John Isherwood and his mother was Betty Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Betty Flitcroft. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named James, Thomas, James, Harry, William, Richard, John, Betty and Mally.  He was the fifth oldest of the ten known children.  He died at the age of 6 in April 1806 in Edgworth.  He was buried on April 15th, 1806 in Turton.¹
