James was born in April 1791 in Quarlton and his baptism took place on April 16th, 1791 at St. Anne (Turton).1 2  James' father was John Isherwood and his mother was Betty Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Betty Flitcroft. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, James, John, Harry, William, Richard, John, Betty and Mally.  He was the oldest of the ten known children.  He died at the age of 2 in December 1793 in Quarlton.  He was buried on December 11th, 1793 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1
