James was born in June 1795 in Quarlton and his baptism took place on June 4th, 1795 at St. Anne (Turton).1  James' father was John Isherwood and his mother was Betty Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Betty Flitcroft. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named James, Thomas, John, Harry, William, Richard, John, Betty and Mally.  He was the third oldest of the ten known children.  He died at the age of 14 in January 1810 in Edgworth.  He was buried on January 19th, 1810 at Turton Chapel.1
