James was born in October 1838 in Preston and his baptism took place on October 7th, 1838 at St. John (Preston).¹

Birth Notes

James' father was Ralph Isherwood and his mother was Ann Mather. His paternal grandparents were James Isherwood and Susan Crompton; his maternal grandparents were Isaac Mather and Alice Fielding. He had three brothers and six sisters, named Thomas, Ralph, John, Mary, Jenny, Charlotte, Ann, Susan and Alice. He had an adopted sister named Charlotte.
