Harriot's father was Richard Hanson and her mother was Margaret (Peggy) Mather. Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Amy (Amey or Emy) Worsley. She had three brothers and nine sisters, named Thomas, Edmund, Henry, Sarah, Margaret, Ann, Esther, Mary, Nancy, Elizabeth, Margaret and Martha. She was the tenth oldest of the thirteen children.
