Edmund's father was Richard Hanson and his mother was Margaret (Peggy) Mather. His maternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Amy (Amey or Emy) Worsley. He had two brothers and ten sisters, named Thomas, Henry, Sarah, Margaret, Ann, Esther, Mary, Nancy, Elizabeth, Margaret, Harriot and Martha. He was the eleventh oldest of the thirteen children. He died in 1863 in Aspull.¹
