After his mother died, John, Mary, Willian and James were sent to St. Vincent's, a Poor Law School in Fulwood, Preston.
John, the oldest stayed in Liverpool, working as a dock labourer. His three younger siblings, were sent to Canada as "British Home Child" through the Catholic Emigrating Association.
