Joseph's father was John Francis Cross and his mother was Annie Smith. He had a brother and two sisters, named Francis, Elizabeth and Mary.  Francis and Joseph were twins. He had seven half-brothers and three half-sisters, named John, Charles, William, James, Albert, George, Alexander, Mary, Ruth and Lily.
