John was born on June 15th, 1865 in Victoria (Au).1  John's father was Thomas Brereton and his mother was Anne Brereton.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Brereton and Martha Hughes; his maternal grandparents were Richard Brereton and (Elizabeth) Ellen Lea. He had two brothers and a sister, named Elisha, Richard and Martha.  He was the second youngest of the four children.  He died at the age of 70 in 1935 in Victoria (Au).1

‌John and Mary were married in a religious ceremony in 1893 in Victoria (Au).1   They had six sons and two daughters, named Roland, David, Edward, William, George, John, Maryann and Dorothy.
