William was born on November 20th, 1849 in Ashton-under-Lyne and his baptism took place there on April 10th, 1853.1 2  William's father was William Boothroyd and his mother was Mary Stocks.  His maternal grandparents were Benjamin Stocks and Sarah (Sally) Campinot. He had three brothers and a sister, named James, George, Joseph and Sarah.  He was the second oldest of the five children. He had a half-sister named Eliza.  He died at the age of 73 in 1922.
