Sarah's father was William Boothroyd and her mother was Mary Stocks. Her maternal grandparents were Benjamin Stocks and Sarah (Sally) Campinot. She had four brothers named James, William, George and Joseph. She was the fourth oldest of the five children. She had a half-sister named Eliza.
