John's father was George Blackburn and his mother was Martha Sykes.  His paternal grandparents were Michael Blackburn and Hannah Eastwood. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Jonathan, George, Hannah, Elizabeth and Lydia.  He was the third oldest of the six children. He had three half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Henry, Joseph, Michael, Hannah, Mary and Ellen.
