Stephen was born on April 4th, 1825 in Haverhill, Suffolk, Massachusetts, United States.  Stephen's father was Thomas Gowers and his mother was Rebecca Farrant.  His paternal grandfather was John Gowers and his paternal grandmother is Rachel Webb. He had nine brothers and five sisters, named James, Thomas, David, John, Jabez, Elijah, Martha, John, Albert, Sarah, Rachel, Matilda, Martha and Elizabeth.  He is the fourth oldest of the fifteen children.
