James was born on June 13th, 1820 in Haverhill, Suffolk, Massachusetts, United States.  James' father was Thomas Gowers and his mother was Rebecca Farrant.  His paternal grandfather was John Gowers and his paternal grandmother is Rachel Webb. He had nine brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, Stephen, David, John, Jabez, Elijah, Martha, John, Albert, Sarah, Rachel, Matilda, Martha and Elizabeth.  He is the oldest of the fifteen children.
