David was born on March 17th, 1827 in Haverhill, Suffolk, , England.  David's father was Thomas Gowers and his mother was Rebecca Farrant.  His paternal grandfather was John Gowers and his paternal grandmother is Rachel Webb. He had nine brothers and five sisters, named James, Thomas, Stephen, John, Jabez, Elijah, Martha, John, Albert, Sarah, Rachel, Matilda, Martha and Elizabeth.  He was the fifth oldest of the fifteen children.  He died at the age of 80 in 1907 in Haverhill, Suffolk, Massachusetts, United States.
