John was born in 1833 in Haverhill, Suffolk, England.  John's father was Thomas Gowers and his mother was Rebecca Farrant.  His paternal grandfather was John Gowers and his paternal grandmother is Rachel Webb. He had nine brothers and five sisters, named James, Thomas, Stephen, David, Jabez, Elijah, Martha, John, Albert, Sarah, Rachel, Matilda, Martha and Elizabeth.  He was the eighth oldest of the fifteen children.  He died at the age of 6 in 1839 in Haverhill, Suffolk, England.
