Rachel was born on August 8th, 1829 in Haverhill, Suffolk, Massachusetts, United States.  Rachel's father was Thomas Gowers and her mother was Rebecca Farrant.  Her paternal grandfather was John Gowers and her paternal grandmother is Rachel Webb. She had ten brothers and four sisters, named James, Thomas, Stephen, David, John, Jabez, Elijah, Martha, John, Albert, Sarah, Matilda, Martha and Elizabeth.  She is the sixth oldest of the fifteen children.
